Frequently asked questions

Who handles the property transfer and the bond?

The transferring attorney is usually appointed by the seller. The lender appoints the attorney who registers its mortgage bond. They coordinate the transaction where a purchase and home loan are linked.

Who pays transfer costs?

The buyer generally pays the transfer costs, as set out in the sale agreement. Ask the conveyancer for an itemised quote and check any specific cost arrangements in your agreement.

Is transfer duty the same as the attorney's fee?

No. Transfer duty is a tax administered by SARS. Attorney fees and other registration charges are separate components of the transfer costs.

Can I use the calculator as my final quote?

The calculator gives an estimate from the supplied July 2026 schedule. Your transaction, tax treatment and additional requirements can affect the final costs. Request a written quote before committing to a budget.

Will a paid-off bond cancel automatically?

No. A registered mortgage bond still needs a separate cancellation process. Contact your lender about the instruction, costs and any notice requirements.

Can I choose WDS to register my home loan?

The bank appoints an authorised panel attorney. Ask the bank whether WDS can be appointed for your particular loan.

How long will my transfer take?

The time depends on the agreement's conditions, documents, linked transactions and registration requirements. Ask your conveyancing team for the current stage and outstanding items rather than relying on a fixed completion date.

How do I request a progress update?

Contact your WDS conveyancing team with your name and file reference. The Client Centre provides a status enquiry form and document checklists.

Which office should I visit?

WDS has offices in Pretoria, Midstream and Hartbeespoort. Contact our central team to confirm the appropriate office and arrange an appointment.
